Football pundit believes Leicester City star ‘better than Neymar’ as Newcastle draws interests
Newcastle United would be better off signing Leicester City midfielder James Maddison than Neymar or Eden Hazard.
According to pundit Paul Merson, City will lose a lot of players this summer, including Maddison, who has been linked with a move away.
Newcastle and Manchester City are both said to be interested in the 26-year-old, who joined Leicester from Norwich City for £25 million in 2018.
Newcastle have expressed an interest in Maddison, and Merson believes he would be a better fit for Eddie Howe’s team than PSG and Brazil superstar Neymar, or Real Madrid winger Eden Hazard.
“Big players have left Leicester City over the years and I expect the trend to continue this summer, with Youri Tielemans and Maddison linked with potential transfers,” Merson wrote for Sportskeeda.
“Maddison is is a top-quality player who I’m a huge fan of – I think he’d be a fantastic signing for Newcastle.
“He’d be a much better signing for them than the likes of Neymar and Hazard if you think about their long-term project over four or five seasons.”
Maddison’s contract at Leicester expires in the summer of 2024, and he has been in talks with the club about a new deal but has yet to reach an agreement.
Youri Tielemans, whose contract expires this summer, has also been linked with a move to Newcastle.
